Advice?

If you could provide one piece of advice to a beginning teacher, what would it be?

Ask questions. Ge to know people in other departments. Get to know people in your department. Get to know other people who teach your section. Don't be afraid to ask for things that you want--the worst that happens is they say no. Join/Sign up to step out of your comfort zone to make yourself a better teacher for your kids. Keep learning. Be okay with kids correcting you.

I echo everything in the previous comment. A few things I would add: try get to know some of your kids personally (like their favorite food/sport etc.) and occasionally chat to them about themselves (they are amazed when you actually remember something personal).
When you have trouble with kids that play sports, are in a club, or in ROTC - talk with their coaches/sponsors. It can do wonders!
When you have a bad teaching day (at time you just can't think straight), do not be discouraged. The kids will forget when you come back the next day and you're back on par.
Try to have a regular schedule for grading/planning/relaxing.
Don't be afraid to start something new.
On occasion, do something completely wacky in class. Keeps the kids interested, and on their toes.
